Bicycling in Oak Park PDF Print E-mail

bicycling

Oak Park is the nurturing ground for entire schools of architecture, literature, visual and performance arts. Explore the Village and its attractions on tours from the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, and the Oak Park Visitors Center. Experience the architecture of Wright and Maher's Pleasant Home, as well as the inspiration of Hemingway at his birthplace home and the Hemingway Museum. Listen, and you can feel the music - jazz, symphonies, folk, alternative, classical. Revel in performances by Festival Theater and the Village Players. Taste the ambiance and cuisine of acclaimed local restaurants and intimate cafes. Take in the natural beauty and splendor of the Oak Park Conservatory.

This is a Village that appreciates art in so many forms, and spreads it before you in so many ways. The world's largest concentration of Frank Lloyd Wright homes is joined by over 40 galleries, studios and antique shops showcasing the works of local artisans, clustered in pockets throughout the Village. An active Oak Park Area Arts Council has propelled the arts from an occasional event to an almost daily celebration. Three locations of the Oak Park Public Library, local bookstores and cafes are all havens for author readings, writer workshops, book discussions and literary events.

Bicycling in Oak Park
The Village of Oak Park has a long tradition of encouraging safe cycling with bicycle friendly Share the Road signs at all major community entry points, written guidelines to help cyclists and motorists get along on the roadway and bike racks located throughout the community. The Village even offers fully enclosed, weatherproof bike lockers located at the intermodal CTA/Union Pacific station on North Boulevard at Marion Street. Bicycles also are permitted on CTA and Metra trains every day except during weekday rush hours of 7 – 9 a.m. and 4 – 6 p.m. All CTA and PACE buses serving Oak Park have bike racks mounted on them as well. Check the links along the right side of the page for a range of information for bicyclists.

Bicycling plan in the works
The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, a non-profit, volunteer-based bicycling advocacy organization, is working with the Village to develop a plan to expand residents’ transportation options with new bikeways and bike parking near local businesses. The plan also will help identify programs to promote bicycling as a safe, comfortable transportation option.
